Flow

EGE offers thermodynamic flow controllers without moveable parts, which means they are robust and resistant to soiling. Controllers for fluids such as water, glycol mixtures or chemicals are as much part of the product range as sensors for gases such as air and carbon dioxide. Intrinsically safe sensors based on ATEX for explosive and hazardous areas are also available. Additional variations consist of high temperature sensors up to 160 °C, special sensors made from such materials as Hasloy, Monel, titanium and tantalum with high resistance to chemicals, and programmable flow sensors with digital displays. The flow controllers are either screwed into the side of the pipe or added to the line itself in the form of inline sensors.

The thermal flow controllers by EGE can be used wherever flows have to be monitored. The standard one-piece sensors are made from the very durable V4a stainless steel (DIN 1.4571).  For especially aggressive fluids, EGE manufactures sensors made from special materials such as bronze, Hasloy, titanium or even PTFE. EGE flow controllers are reliable units for the automation industry, chemical industry, and wherever flows have to be monitored in a safe, robust and low-maintenance manner.

EGE airflow controllers are defined by their quick response and reliable function. The applied function principle does not require any moveable parts for the airflow controllers, which is why they well suited for use in aggressive environments.  Airflow controllers are available for flows from 0.2 m/s to 25 m/s.

Level controller

Level controllers without moveable parts are available in various versions and are extremely resistant to soiling. Capacitive level controllers are available for gases to -200 °C as well as hot glue up to +230 °C. PTFE and PEEK are here the preferred materials because they prevent adhesions. Opto fill sensors with glass or PSU tip do not require a medium adjustment and are simply added top the tank. These sensors are also available as explosion-proof units in accordance with ATEX. Ultrassonic sensors, pressure controllers or the capacitive high-temperature measuring probe KFA continuously monitor and log fill levels.

Inductive proximity switches

EGE offers special inductive proximity switches for special applications. Focus is on TROPICAL switches which exceed IP 69K with a temperature range up to       +120 °C and is optimally suited for corrosive environments. High temperature switches up to 160 °C are also offerd. Other hot area sensors can be used in temperatures up to 250 °C. The lower end of the temperature scale is at -60 °C and applies to the POLAR switches. Large switching distances up to 170 mm and sensors resistant to rolling oils made from PTFE, PP or PEEK are also available for the food industry.  Intrinsically safe ex-classified sensors according to ATEX and compact dust-EX and gas-EX sensors complete the product program.

Infrared detectors

Infrared detectors are used wherever and whenever temperatures have to be monitored and conventional sensors would fail due to excessive heat. EGE infrared detectors are characterized by an especially robust, industrial design and construction that protects the unit from mechanical stresses. The units are built in accordance with IP 68 and are thus waterproof up to 3 bar and resistant to high-pressure cleaning methods as well as temperature and climate fluctuations (IP 69K). The fiber glass optic is designed for the most extreme environmental conditions and can withstand temperatures up to 250°C, special version versions even up to 500°C.

Infrared detectors - Applications

Function and application

Where conventional sensors would fail due to too high temperature, infrared detectors working on a non-contact principle can be used. They respond to the radiated heat of the hot materials. Compact units with optics are used for distances of 2 to 8 m from the object. For distances of only a few cm, heat-resistant light-conducting cables should be used for transmission.

Series ODM

Infrared detectors ODM... detect energy radiated by a hot body in the near infrared range (1 ... 3 µm). Energy absor- bed within the spectral range determines detected temperatures. Optical and assessment electronics are situated in a stainless steel casing. O-ring gaskets ensure safe operation even in the presence of large temperature and humidity fluctuations. The plug connector is water tight to IP 68.
If environmental temperatures exceed 70° C, an optical fibre cable can be used up to 250° C. This can be fitted with a supplementary optical system if required. In case of such applications, the optical fibre cable should be laid in protective tubes and not be frequently moved.
The fibre cable fast-connector LLK-plug allows for fast and safe exchange.
The infrared detectors are specified for different sensitivities. If the target temperature exceeds the sensitivity specified, the output of the detector will be activated.

Series OD 100

The sensor OD 100 GSPP detects temperatures up  to 300°C contactlessly. Within this temperature range it is possible to adjust two switching points. The switching status is indicated by two colour LEDs. The sensor OD 100 GA has one analogue output 4.20mA. The temperature of an object detected by the infrared detector  depends  on  the  emission  coefficient,  the distance and the lighting area. To prevent these influences it is important to adjust the switching points of the infrared-detector on site.

Series ODE

The ODE 350 infrared sensor measures the energy transmitted from a body in the near infrared region (1 ... 3 µm). The energy taken up in this region of the spectrum is a measure of the temperature of the hot objekt. The device has four outputs which are independent of one another; two analogue outputs (current, voltage) and two outputs each with a switching threshold preselectable as either a relay change-over contact or as a semiconductor output. The required characteristic curve is preselected by a selector switch.

The device is operated using a fibre-optic cable, which can have temperature stability of up to 350 ºC. The standard cable can take up to 250 ºC. They have quick-release fastener provided with thread. To limit the angular field and increase sensitivity supplementary lenses for fibreoptic cable are available.

The given sensitivities refer to the use of a 1m long fibreoptic cable with a bundle diameter of 4mm during full illumination. Other fibre-optic cables and lenses yield correspondingly different minimum operating temperatures. As a rule, a fibre-optic cable with an additional length of 1m decreases the reaction sensitivity by 75 ºC.

Adjustment on switching detectors

1. Remove protection screw from the potentiometer.
2. The sensor must be mounted at its finally position.
3. Turn the screwdriver till the output switches (LED red).
Now the temperature is adjusted on which the infrared-detector responsed. The switching temperature can be increased if you turn the potentiometer clockwise.
4. Remount the protection screw.

Analogue temperature detection

The current output for the temperature is correct when:
a) the measured object has a homogeneous temperature and when its area has a minimum size of the sensor.s detection range (see path of the rays)
b) the emmision coefficient is Epsilon = 1 (black body).

At other cases the OD 100 GA measure a too low tempe rature. Therefore the OD 100 GA has a potentiometer for an adjustment.

Adjustment

1. Remove protection screw from the potentiometer.
2. The sensor must be mounted at is final position.
3. The actual temperature of the object must be known.
4. Turn  the  potentiometer  clockwise  until  the  output  current correspond with the object temperature (see output characteristics).

Approval for safety applications
Sensors for personal security must have a qualifification approval according to EN 954-1 and must be labeled accordingly. Sensors that are not labeled must not be used for applications of this kind.

Ultrasonic sensors - Technology and application

Basics
Ultrasonic sensors are transmitting and receiving ultrasonic signals. These signals have a frequency range from 65 kHz up to 300 kHz. Ultrasonic sensors can be used for several different applications, for example:

Cycle period

A pulse is transmitted at the time 0, reflected by an objekt, received by the transducer and again reflected. The next pulse can be transmitted when all energy of the first pulse is absorbed. This time period is called TCycle (cycle period). (Fig. 1)

Angle of beam

The energy of the ultrasonic pulse is transmitted in form of a cone along the sensor axis. The highest intensity is on the axis and decreases with rising angles. The angle of beam is defined by the angle through which the energy of the ultrasonic pulse is reduced of 33% of its maximum value.

The best detection is given by an object that stands vertical to the transducer axis. To give a save detection, the object should not have an greater angle than half of the angle of beam (alpha /2). (Fig. 2) If the object is canted at a greater angle, there is no reflection of the ultrasonic pulses. An object with a flat surface and canted at an angle of 45° to the transducer axis refracts the ultrasonic pulse in an angle of 90°.

Voltage amplitude

During the transmission the voltage amplitude of the ultrasonic pulse is approximate 80V PP.
The pulse period of the ultrasonic pulse depends on the period of the transmission pulse and on the ringing time of the transducer.
The voltage amplitude of the received echo is in the range of V.  (Fig. 3)

Blind zone

It is not possible to receive an echo during the transmission of the ultrasonic pulse (0 up to tpulse). This time period defines the range of the Blindzone (0 up to XD). In this Blindzone it is not possible to measure a distance. (Fig. 4)

Metal detectors

EGE metal detectors are reliable and robust. They are designed for outside applications in harsh climates. The metal detector System 3000 is designed to detect medium-sized and larger parts. The system has a very effective sensitivity setting. Together with the amplifier MU 3300, it responds to medium-sized parts such as nails, nuts or pieces of flatware when set to the highest sensitivity setting. Together with the amplifier MDV, it only responds to larger metal parts such as the teeth of an excavator shovel, equipment or tool parts or paneling. Such parts could damage stone-crushing machines, vibratory equipment, or wood-chipping machines. 
When used in this manner, the metal detector is suitable for protecting machinery by preventing that larger parts interrupt operation of the equipment. It detects metal during bulk material transport by means of contactless measurements.

Ex-classified devices

ATEX

Work areas and machines used to process hazardous substances or materials are subject to especially high risks and therefore protected with suitable measures.  The EX representative of the company or plant determines the production resources and equipment in such a way as to minimize the risk of an explosion even with malfunctions or defects of such resources or equipment. The utilized devices have to be certified by an independent organization in accordance with the EX guideline ATEX 94/9 and then are issued a test certificate, namely the ATEX Type Test Certificate.

EGE offers a broad spectrum of sensors for industrial automation and process technology applications. All of these are approved for use in hazardous environments. EGE has many years of experience with EX protection and was the first company to globally market inductive and capacitive proximity switches also approved for use in dust atmospheres prone to explosions.

EGE provides a broad product range of sensors for gas EX areas. EGE gas EX sensors are intrinsically safe and are therefore operated with an external EX amplifier (Zener barrier, isolating switch amplifier), which limits the amount of energy that can be brought to an EX environment (Zone 0 or Zone 1). The switching units are either set up outside of the EX area or can be operated in Zone 1 (example: SS400 Ex or SF3).

Flow controllers for use in the chemical industry are made from stainless steel (V4A / 1.4711) or different special materials such as Hasloy or titanium so that they are also suitable for aggressive media.

To monitor fill levels, EGE supplies devices suitable for aggressive or corrosive media and high temperatures up to 195°C (in temperature class T3).

EGE manufactures proximity switches and flow controllers for areas at risk for dust explosions. They are operated with a separate switching unit (Zener barrier / isolating switch amplifier) and are approved for use in Zone 20 or Zone 21, which means in areas with an almost always or frequent atmosphere subject to dust explosions.

For areas where hazardous/explosive materials are rare (Zone 22), EGE provides compact units that do not need an external switching device (Zener barrier) and are connected the same way standard proximity switches or flow controllers are.

ATEX Dust Ex - Application

Example of zoning for a silo facility

When storing grain as well as during the loading and unloading of transport vehicles for these products, it is possible for potentially explosive dust-air mixtures to be produced. Zoning allocations must be undertaken for the selection of the approved monitoring devices. A potentially explosive atmosphere is constantly present on the inside of silos filled with grain (zone 20). Outside of the silo and in the loading duct this condition occurs only occasionally, e.g. during filling and empty (zone 21). Zone 21 is enclosed by Zone 22, in which hazardous dust-air mixtures can be found only during breakdowns, which in this case is estimated to be very seldom.

Airflow sensors STS 21..
The airflow sensors in series STS 21.. are conceived for use in extraction systems and conveyor systems. They belong to equipment category 1D and are therefore approved for use in zone 20, the most demanding.

Amplifier SZA..
Amplifiers for air flow monitors in series SZA are intended for installation on a mounting rail. The devices can be delivered as switches with adjustable limiting values or as an analog device with 4..20mA output as a trend display.

Inductive sensors IGEX and IDEX
Sensors for detecting metals in the Ex area zone 20 or zone 22. Devices can be delivered in the standard configurations M12, M18 and M30. For large switching distances there are configurations with diameters of 80mm to 160mm.

Capacitive sensors KGEX and KDEX
Sensors for almost all materials in the Ex area zone 20 or zone 22 can be delivered as proximity switches up to 80 mm diameter or as used as level monitor with G1 thread.

Metal detectors - Technology and application

The metal detector System 3000 is designed to detect medium size and larger pieces of metal. The system has a very effective means of adjusting sensitivity. When used with the MU 3300 amplifier, it will respond at the highest level of sensitivity to medium size parts like nails, washers, or pieces of flatware. When used with the MDV amplifier, it will respond only to larger pieces of metal like teeth from an excavator bucket, tools, or metal paneling. If not discovered, these items could destroy stone-crushing machines, vibratory equipment, or wood-chipping machines. When used in this manner, the metal detector is suitable for protecting machinery, whereby smaller parts will not interrupt operation of the equipment. It detects metal during bulk material transport by means of contactless measurement.

The System 3000 consists of an amplifier and an inductive detector  coil.  The  amplifier  is  equipped  with  an  automatic adjustment  regulator  that  ensures  reliable  operation  even when disturbing metal parts are in close proximity to the detector coil. In addition, the adjustment regulator also ensures that only metal parts that are in motion will be detected.

Metal detector EGE

One of the amplifier's tasks is to process the signals emitted by the metal detector coil and convert them into an electronic pulse. The detector coil generates an electromagnetic field. As soon as a piece of metal passes by the coil, it disturbs that field, resulting in a signal that can be evaluated.

The operator adjusts the metal detector's sensitivity on the potentiometer. The coil's sensitivity is dependent on several factors, including: the coil's environment, the electromagnetic characteristics of the material to be detected, and the speed with which the material is transported.

The MU 3300 amplifier has a self-monitoring function. Any error that appears in the system will activate a separate output relay. The unit's electronics are installed in a robust metal housing that has a window for the functional display.

The MDV 3172  and MDV 3220 amplifiers are particularly well suited for use in extremely difficult environments like those that involve dirt, temperature fluctuations, or vibration. These models therefore possesses only the most critical adjustment and display functions.

The detector coils are mounted with PVC columns on an aluminium baseplate that shields the coils from electromagnetic disturbances coming from the substructure. The baseplate simultaneously provides stability. Whenever the operator must arrange the detector coil in the presence of ironstructural elements, he can use the aluminium plate to shield the coil.

It is preferable to arrange the detector coils underneath the material transport belts in order to minimize the chance of mechanical damage to the coil. The distance to the belt's transport rollers should be at least equal to the width of a coil. In order to most effectively exploit the metal detector's sensitivity,  maintain  a  metal-free  area  around  the  detector  coil approximay equal to 1.5 to 2 times the coil diameter.

If the coil is installed in a hanging position above the transport belt, always make sure that no structural parts made of iron are too close to the coil and especially that they do not vibrate. If this cannot be avoided, it will be necessary to reduce the sensitivity.  This  will  consequently  reduce  the  detection distance or may have the result that only large pieces of metal will be detected.
The detector coils have a special 3-meter long cable. If the distance between the detector coil and the amplifier is longer  than 3 meters, connect these two units with the KS 030 DS... extension  cable.  The  longest  permissible  distance  is  50 meters. In order to ensure that the system will work properly at that distance, we recommend using the EGE special extension cable.

By using connection box MA 125 two detector coils can operate together with one amplifier MDV.../ MU....The maximum cable length between one coil and the connection box MA 125 is 3 m.

Approval for safety applications
Sensors for personal security must have a qualifification approval according to EN 954-1 and must be labeled accordingly. Sensors that are not labeled must not be used for applications of this kind.
